TOPIC: THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD – PART 7
BIBLE TEXT: PSALM 23:4B
“Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me”
Rod and staff perform two different functions but both are necessary to bring total comfort in the end. Rod is used for correction, leading and guidance. Rod symbolizes an object of discipline and modelling. Every Shepherd values their rod because it is used to discipline and redirect any sheep that is going astray from the track. Rod even though is painful on the body but It is vital to guarantee the successful end of the sheep.
Beloved, if you don’t want to taste the rod you cannot taste the glory. If you reject God’s rod, you will never enjoy his comfort. Any child left to live anyhow is a bastard. God will chastise you when you are wrong but it is choice to either make the correction or reject the divine guidance. Humility is accepting and acknowledging our fault before God and remorsefully repent of them.
In Hebrews 12:6, the Bible says:
…because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”…
The verse above says if God loves you, he will chastise you when you are wrong. This is why I pity people who live in sin willfully and claim they are born again. There is nothing like God loves me no matter how much I sin. God chastises everyone he accepts as a son. If God does not discipline you for your sin, maybe you are only deceiving yourself by claiming you are his sin. It is one thing to claim to know God and another for God to know you.
Beloved, Sometimes God can abandon a man when he refuses to change his ways. He allows you to follow your path when you continually reject his discipline, chastisement and rod of correction.
In Hosea 4:17 NIV, the Bible says:
“Ephraim is joined to idols; leave him alone!”
May God not tell the angels in heaven and the Holy Spirit to leave you alone. When you consistently and willfully reject the leading and instruction of God but choose your own way of sin, this is the final result of such action.
Beloveth, the rod is for correction and staff is for celebration. The rod comes before the staff. Until you are ready for correction, God will never place you in the position of celebration. We shall discuss deeper on the staff tomorrow.
If there is one thing I pray for often, it is not to be left to go my own way. I don’t want to do my will but his will. I don’t want to live my way but his own way. I don’t want to please myself but Him. I don’t want to live in sin and be happy about it. I want to dwell in the secret place of the highest and abide under the shadow of the almighty. Why?
In Prov. 13:24 NIV, the Bible says:
Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them.
Please meditate on this truth. If you are left alone by those who should correct you, it shows you that they don’t love you and doesn’t care if you are destroyed.
