TOPIC: SHOULD A CHRISTIAN SUFFER IN LIFE?

BIBLE: 1 Peter. 2:19

For this is commendable, if because of conscience toward God one endures grief, SUFFERING WRONGFULLY.

This verse shows it is possible for Christians to suffer wrongfully because they do not want to defile their conscience by doing what I s against God’s word. When you are maltreated and wrongfully accused because of your stance for the gospel and God’s word, you are suffering for Christ. Suffering for Christ comes with grief, persecution. It is important to note that sicknesses and diseases cannot be our suffering for Christ because Jesus has already redeemed us from that 2,000 years ago.

In 1 Peter 2:20, the Bible says:

For what credit is it if, when you are beaten for your faults, you take it patiently? BUT WHEN YOU DO GOOD AND SUFFER, IF YOU TAKE IT PATIENTLY, THIS IS COMMENDABLE BEFORE GOD.

From the verse above, the Bible says if you are suffering for your own fault, take it patiently. Sometimes people are suffering because of their ignorance, laziness, spiritual slumber, iniquities, bad attitude. This is not suffering for Christ. But, if you are led to do good and you suffer for doing the right thing, it is suffering for Christ’s sake.

In 1 Pet. 2:21, the bible says Christ suffers and we should follow his example in suffering. What type of suffering of Christ are we to follow is it? It is answered in the following verses

1 Peter 2:22-23

[22]Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:

[23]Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not, but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:

From the verses above, Christ suffering was that;

* He committed no sin, yet condemned for sin
*They reviled him yet he didn’t argue with his accusers
*He suffered being beaten for no offense, yet did not threaten them
* he refused to take vengeance though he could call down legions of angels to rescue him

A Christian will suffer persecution no matter how small it may be. People will talk about you wrongfully behind or before you. They may deny you of some benefits because you will not cooperate with their devilish act. You may be insulted during evangelism, condemn for preaching the gospel, remove from a position because you will not take a bribe. All these shall be considered in the subsequent post.
