TOPIC: SHOULD MINISTERS OF THE GOSPEL EARN WAGES?
Bible Text: 1 Cor. 9:14
Even so, hath “the Lord ordained” that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.
It is obvious from the verse above that Jesus commanded that full-time preachers should live base on what they get from their ministerial assignment. Paul told us in the verse above that “the Lord ordained” it to be so. This wasn’t Paul written but instruction from the Lord.
However, there is nothing wrong with self-supporting Pastors using their personal income to support themselves while doing the ministry. If a man is not called into a full-time ministerial assignment, there is no point depending on the Church for anything.
Apostle Paul preached the gospel without charging, sacrificed everything to ensure the gospel spread abroad, preached the gospel as a matter of necessity, he laboured sometimes to ensure he doesn’t become a burden to anyone in the Church. However, that is not a template for mission work. He himself explains this better than any other apostles. He never discourages the church from taking care of the ministers of God for their labour and sacrifice.
In 1 Cor. 9:11, Apostle says
*Since we have planted spiritual seed among you, aren’t we entitled to a harvest of physical food and drink?* NLT
Today, we cannot compare full-time ministers with Apostle Paul. Firstly, Paul had no family – no wife or children to carer, no school bills, no house rent, and many more. He rented house once and that was in Rome. He was housed most times by disciples wherever he went. This is not the kind of gesture Christian would do easily today. Paul was a free missionary and answerable to nobody but God when it comes to where to go. He didn’t travel with family members to cater for. He is not transferred to Egypt or china like many missionaries today, he goes in his company as led by the Holy Spirit. Yes, although Paul was a tentmaker in Corinth, he still received support from other churches to allow him to continue his gospel ministry in Corinth. He may not take it for himself but he used it for his ministry – 2 Cor. 11:8
The truth is, If we leave the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the part-time ministers alone today, we won’t preach the gospel to the nations of the world in 1 million years. This is profound. As a Pastor, I know interior villages in Nigeria that a Part-time will never time and courage to pastor there. You can’t transfer someone to Sokoto from Lagos as a Part-time minister. I talk to people in the mission field in Pakistan where nobody wants to dare go. There are responsibilities in the mission that someone in the office cant attends to. Everyone is needed to get the gospel to the entire world. How many souls are won during banking hours by part-time pastors who are bankers? How many counseling sessions can be done by the managing director in his office?
In Romans 10:14-15, the Bible says:
How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? *And how will they hear without a preacher?*
And how shall they *preach unless they are sent*? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things
When Pastor Adeboye abandoned his Ph.D., he sounds ridiculous but we all love him today. If he didn’t obey and listen to people devil speaks through then, millions may be on their way to hell including me. If Bishop didn’t abandon his Architecture design profession, millions may have ended up in hell. Pastor Olukoya was a Ph.D. holder and the first molecular biologist in Nigeria and he left it all without practicing to start a deliverance ministry and millions have been impacted. Pastor Chris Oyakhilome was an architect and today, he ministered healing in an unusual dimension to the hopeless. Bro. Mike Bamiloye sounded so dumb and stupid to many leaders of the Church when he said he had drama ministry, today, we love Mount Zion. They all didn’t do it alone when they started, they all have staff like them and they were all earning the little salary that cannot feed them in Church before they stooped after becoming blessed.
Beloved, instead of looking for a way to condemn the call, look rather for a way to be a blessing. We all want to be associated with the General Overseers today but only a few were there for them in those days. Be there for someone.
