TOPIC: ARE YOU A LIVING SACRIFICE?
BIBLE TEXT: ROMANS 12:1
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
What do you think God wants from you as a Christian? Your money? Your voice or beauty? Your physical labor in his house? All these may sound good but none is acceptable to God until you become a living sacrifice.
Let’s dissect the text
I beseech you…
To “beseech” means to plead with someone or ask someone earnestly to come forth or to come near. It shows this a call from God to us to come near and hear this.
….That YE PRESENT your bodies as a living sacrifice……
The first thing to note is that you have a responsibility to do. This is not something God is going to do for you. It is every Christian responsibility to present their bodies. It is called self-discipline.
God will not force a Christian to surrender his will or totality to him. We have free will to obey or disobey, give all or none to God. Whoever you yield to in your actions is your ruler. We all have the power to decide between life and death.
What is a living sacrifice? First, if there is a living sacrifice, there is a dead sacrifice too.
In the Old Testament, the object of sacrifices like a goat, lamb, and others offered to God are usually killed before it is offered but in the New Testament, God does not require the blood of a goat or any lamb because he has received the only needed sacrifice of Jesus on the cross of Calvary. He was slain as the lamb of God offered as a sacrifice for us once. However, Jesus is alive and not dead again because death could not hold him down.
In the same vein, God requires our body though alive but to be presented to him as a sacrifice. What does that mean? What you give as a sacrifice doesn’t belong to you again. It is now owned by the one you sacrificed it to. The implication of this is that you cannot live your life anyhow again.
Beloved, God doesn’t accept any ritual sacrifice again. What he needs is our body through which he can cooperate and work with us. This is why God wants us to make our bodies a living sacrifice; it is called a living sacrifice because we are still alive yet we have become a sacrifice.
The body no longer belongs to us or in our charge as our property. We are now God’s property; we no longer have our will but the will of the master because we are now a sacrifice unto him. When a Christian offers himself, he must decrease while God must increase; his own will must not overrule the will of God; his own way must conform to the will of God for his own life; he doesn’t have the life of himself again, he has the life that God gives to him; he’s no longer controlled by his own will but by the will of God. That is what it means to become a living sacrifice.
It means to totally surrender to the ordinances and absolute control of the master. If we become a living sacrifice that means we are ready to follow his precepts, statutes, and what he commands for our own lives.
….*That ye present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto God”…..
Beloved, until your body becomes a living sacrifice, there is no way you can live a holy life; become acceptable unto God and offer a reasonable service unto God. That is why before we offer service to God, we have to present ourselves acceptable before God.
The reason why people are struggling to do the service of God today is that they are not a living sacrifice but want to offer service to God. When you become a living sacrifice, you will no longer live your life but Christ will live through you.
Gal. 2:20, apostle Paul said:
“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
Paul is no longer living but Christ is living through Paul because he has crucified the flesh, he has become a living sacrifice to God.
That is why he’s no longer living his life by his own strength, because by strength shall no man prevail but he’s now living his life by the power of God working through him.
Beloved the best way to offer sacrifice is to make ourselves acceptable, when we become acceptable we become holy; when we are holy, we will be acceptable before the throne of grace; then our service can be reasonable. All services come from the body, that is why God requires our body and nothing more.
Beloved, whether you are an usher, teacher, prayer warrior, or working in the children department, everything you do, even giving your money; they all come from your body and because they are from your body, your body must be acceptable through salvation. If your body is not holy then you cannot give a holy sacrifice to God. It is everything that is coming out of you that you can give as a sacrifice and God will accept it when they are holy.
