TOPIC: BRIDLE YOUR TONGUE
TEXT: JAMES 1:26
If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain- James 1:26
No doubt, there are many people praying in the body of Christ today but we have a few abiding in the truth of God’s word. Prayer alone won’t birth a strong and victorious Christian life except there is strong addiction to the written Word of God.
Let’s considered his exegesis phase by phase:
….If any man among you…
Notice the Bible says “if any man”, it shows no matter the title we carry, we are still under ” any man”.
….seem to be religious……
The Bible is saying if any of you “think, assume, has a reputation or supposedly revered as a religious person. Religious as used in the verse does not mean the way of life of people but an act of worship to a deity. So, the passage actually is talking to Christians who seem to be spiritual.
…….and bridleth, not his tongue…..
To bridle means to be a leader to our mouth. That is, we should be able to control and curb our mouth from irrelevant, irresponsible, meaningless, negative, and foolish utterances. God’s principle has no respect for any individual no matter how well placed we may be in the religious cadre. If you cannot maintain discipline in what you say and how much you talk, the next part is for you.
….but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.
This phase says ” our religion is in vain without proper use of our tongue”. It doesn’t mean we have lost salvation but all acts of worship to our God can be rendered useless through careless words from an unbridled tongue.
For example, in Matt. 12:37, the Bible says:
For by your words thou shalt be justified, and by your words, thou shalt be condemned.
You see, our words play a significant role in our destiny. This is why the Bible is saying if you think you are spiritual and you cannot use your mouth appropriately, you will end up having no value or reward after with all your religious observance.
For example, you may worship and praise God for 3 hours in Church but if you won’t control what you confess and proclaim over your life after all the religious exercise, your life won’t produce good fruits because of your negative confessions which can destroy your answers to prayer.
Learn to control your tongue for your own good. Don’t talk anyhow. Don’t call sickness, poverty, sorrow, failure, misfortune into your life. Beware!!!!!!
