TOPIC: HOW TO SAVE YOUR SOULS AFTER SALVATION

TEXT: JAMES 1:21

*_Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls._*

Man is a spirit, he has a soul and lives in the flesh – 1Thess. 5:23. At salvation, your spirit becomes regenerated and becomes new (Eze. 36:26) but your soul and your body are not absolutely saved. This is why you maintain the same colour as you were before salvation. A black man will remain a black man after salvation because nothing changes outside but inside. Likewise, salvation doesn’t take away junk thought and impurities permanently from your mind (soul). The soul/mind still needs to be saved from all forms of impurities daily.

To achieve this, that is, to save the soul, we shall consider James 1:21 phase by phase.

Firstly, …..wherefore lay aside all filthiness…

To lay aside means to “put off, lay down, cast off, put away” etc. To put off what? All filthiness. What is filthiness in this context? Unclean things that pollute the mind, for example; bitterness, pornography, bad films, erotic magazines, etc. Your soul will not enjoy pureness until you have disciplined yourself to feed it only with things that edify it.

Secondly, ……and superfluity of naughtiness….

It means to put away from you the abundance of wickedness in your mind. Your soul/mind won’t enjoy peace if you are doing wickedness.

Thirdly, …and receive with meekness…..

It means to embrace with gentleness, that is, the humility of the mind.

Fourthly, …..the engrafted word…..

Engrafted is from the Greek word “emphutos” which means “implanted”. It means you can only be saved in your soul, that is, thought life through words planted in it. The word you plant inside of you determines your ability to stay above sin and unrighteousness.

In Psalm 119:11, the Psalmist says:

“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee”.

Notice from the Psalmist that the ability to resist sin is determined by how much your mind is renewed by the word of God. It is the word of God that cleanses from all sin and unrighteousness – John 17:17.

In Romans 12:2, the Bible says:

And be not conformed to this world: BUT BE YE TRANSFORMED BY THE RENEWING OF YOUR MIND, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

You would notice from the verse above that your transformation as a Christian is a function of how much you renewed your mind/soul with the word of God. You can be saved and not be transformed. Transformation is not entirely automatic as it requires our diligence to renewing our minds.

Fifthly, ….which is able to “save” the soul…..

The word “save” in this verse is from the Greek word “sōzō”. To save the soul (Sōzō)
however, means “to heal, to preserve, to protect, to be made whole, to deliver, make absolute”.

Therefore, the Bible in James 1:21 is literally saying;

Henceforth, put away from your life all forms of unclean and dirty things that can pollute your mind and put away from you the abundance of wickedness, and receive with humility of the mind the implanted word, which is able to heal, to preserve, to protect, to deliver
to make your souls whole and absolute”.

Please note that it is the word of God that heals from hurt, disappointment, failure, etc. It also protects your soul from strangers, impurities, attacks, etc, and delivers your souls from hell and evil thoughts. It finally makes you absolutely perfect and whole in Christ Jesus
