Bible Text: Hebrews 6:4-6

4. *For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,*

[5] *And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,*

[6] *If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame*

Backsliding is not the same as Apostasy. Every backslider can be restored but whoever apostatised has signed eternity with devil. To backslide spiritually is to draw back from spiritual responsibilities, devotions and commitment. Meanwhile, apostasy means to reject Christ as Lord and Saviour.

You see beloved, no matter the level of backslide, if the victims hasn’t willfully denounced Jesus as his saviour, then, God is searching earnestly for such soul to restore them into fellowship because backsliding could ultimately lead to apostasy. But to denounce Christ after having full knowledge of salvation and eternal life is eternal damnation without remedy. That is why the Bible says “it is impossible” in Hebrews 6:4a.

Who is a backslider? In Proverbs 14:14a, the Bible says:

*The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways:*

A backslider will withdraw from God’s way and refuse to keep his words even though he still believes in Christ as Lord and Saviour. They know the truth but refuse to walk in the light of the truth. But an apostate refuses the Lordship of Christ willfully and reject or deny his Saving Grace.

In our text today, there are 5 qualities of an apostate. They;

*_1. Were once enlightened_*
*_2. Have tasted of the heavenly gift_*
*_3. Were made partakers of the Holy Spirit_*
*_4. Have tasted the good word of God_*
*_5. Have tasted the power of the world to come_*

Notice the Bible started in verse 4 with “it is impossible”. That is, it is impossible for those who have had this sweet experiences yet willfully denounce Jesus as Lord and Saviour to be restored.

Anyone qualified to apostatised must have being genuinely Born again & well established in the faith, receive the Holy Spirit and its gift, have good revelational knowledge of God’s word & have full knowledge of eternal life and experience the move of God.

You see, there are many people in Church today without basic understanding of salvation. Some are even workers yet never surrendered their life to Christ. I went to church for years, heard the word of God but never have a change of heart. I heard the word truly at the time but didn’t tasted the good word of the Lord because going to church is ceremonial to me at the time and also the word never mix with faith in me. At that time, nothing actually seems wrong to me. I just live for my self. When I was younger and in boarding school, I attend mosque with my friends if need be. I didn’t see anything wrong it. At that time, you can’t say I denounce my faith because I haven’t commit myself to any conscious confession though I attend convention and always in church on Sunday.

Another thing to understand about apostasy is that, it takes confession of Jesus Lordship to be saved according to Rom. 10:9-10, so also, denouncing of Jesus must have taken place before someone can be said to apostatised.

For example, in time of trouble, even good Christians ask if God rely exist or hears prayer. The situation of life can sometimes bring doubt to people’s heart of whether there is really God in heavens that answers prayer, at such time, they didn’t denounce him or willfully reject His Lordship but under pressure influenced by circumstances. That is why our golden verse yesterday says: If we sin WILFULLY.

A baby Christian who hasn’t been established in faith can’t commit apostasy. John mark for example ran away from Paul evangelical outreach and returned home, Paul was so disappointed that the issue caused misunderstanding between Paul and Barnabas. Later, Paul sent for same John Mark after he became matured and committed. God will not hold a baby Christian responsible for such mistakes or ignorance. There is babyhood is spirituality too

However, Judas was already a disciple, treasurer and had seen the power and miracles Jesus performed but chose to reject Jesus for the love of money. That’s apostasy.
