Good Morning Saints,
*Topic: _Can a Christian have Assurance of Salvation and Heaven? Part One_*
By: Isaac O. Agbenla
Years ago, I asked my bible study congregation this simple question “how many of you are sure that if you die now, you will enter heaven?”. Everybody was silent and nobody wanted to put their hands up.
This morning, I want explain the following questions:
1. _Can a Christian have assurance of salvation?_
2. _Can we be sure that we are going to make heaven if we die now?_
I have said it several times that half truth can be destructive. Likewise, not searching the scriptures for yourself as a Christian put you in bondage to your fears.
*_Assurance of Salvation_*
In Rom. 8:16, the bible says:
*The Spirit of God himself bears witness with our spirit, that we are children of God*
Anywhere you see spirit with Capital letter in the bible, it means Holy Spirit and small letter spirit means your own spirit which is also called the inner man. You are a spirit (John 3:6), you have a soul and lives in the body (1 Thess. 5:23). You need to understand that the Holy Spirit is dwelling in your spirit man immediately you surrender your life to Jesus and he will remain there forever as long as you’re a Christian (Ephesians 3:16). Like I said in the previous teachings, God doesn’t leave you when you erred, you are convinced of your sins as Christians because Holy Spirit convince you, If he had left, you wouldn’t even have guilt or feel remorse for the sin in question.
In Rom. 8:16, _the bible is saying that the Holy Spirit that is dwelling in your spirit man bears witness, that is, confirms to you that you are a child of God. Glory._
If you don’t have this witness in your heart that you’re born again, this could be caused by three things.
_1. You have been wrongly thought_
2. _You have not learnt how to know the witness of the spirit in you._
3. _Devil is trying everything possible to destroy your assurance of salvation through your weaknesses or mistake you made before_.
This teaching will help you to know thereby reassuring you of your total acceptance.
*How do you know you are saved?*
1. *_Confess Jesus as Lord and Saviour genuinely and with understanding_*: There is different between confession by compulsion sake and confessing because you acknowledge your sins and see the need for salvation. If you are compelled to go forward to accept Jesus by your parent or whoever, it isn’t your decision. Many people confess Jesus by force during evangelism when they don’t mean it. Before confession can led to salvation, the person must confess from the heart and believe strongly in his confession.
There are many people in Church today, most especially in Orthodox Churches who have never confessed Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. I have formal Orthodox members reading now who are my convert and can bear witness. They have been going to Church and never was saved until someone led them to Christ. I personally ask a graduate who is a Catholic member if he was saved and he told he is a Christian that he doesn’t know what I mean by being Born again. I explained salvation there and he told me, if this is what you mean by salvation, then, I am not saved. He is born again today. There are many other testimonies like that.
In Rom. 10:9-10, the bible says:
*_That if thou shall CONFESS with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall BELIEVE in your HEART that God has raised him from the dead, thou shall be saved._*
*_For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation_*.
You see, many people are in church today but are not born again because they were never taught salvation comes by believing and confessing. You can be churchy and not be saved. Giving of alms and prayer will never get you saved until you believe and confess it with your mouth. Cornelius was a giver and just man. He lives a holy life that God himself testify but God told him, you must sent for Peter and he will preach to you the word of salvation until then, your salvation is not guaranteed (Acts 10). Going to church and saying amen to what his read from the pulpit will not get you saved. Such people don’t have assurance of salvation in them but sees going to Church as religious activities.
Likewise, you must believe in your heart what you confess. Learning about Jesus in Christian Religious Studies is not salvation. There are Islamic scholars with PHD in Christian Religious Studies. There are professors of theology who don’t believe in Jesus as their saviour. It is not the knowledge of Jesus that matters, it is believing that knowledge for your salvation that is crucial to God.
Almost everyone on earth have heard or know about the name Jesus but not everyone accepted his Lordship and Sonship. There is different between knowing Jesus and knowing about Jesus.
After taking this steps of salvation, then you should have peace within you that you are indeed saved. If you still don’t have that assurance, then chapter two of this teaching is very crucial to you.
