Understanding God’s Righteousness Part 2 By Isaac O. Agbenla

Good Morning Saints,

Topic: Understanding God’s Righteousness Part 2

Abraham our father never became righteous before God by his works but by obeying God and believing in God as his own God in the midst of uncertainty.

Abraham was an idol worshipper together with his family before God called him out from the family. Even though he has never seen or heard about God yet he obeyed God’s voice and left his kindred to the land God instructed him to go. That was what made him a righteous man. His obedience and believe in God as stated in Genesis 12:1-2

*Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:*
2. *And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:*

Preceding these verses, Abraham had never knew or heard about God. This was the faith he had in God that was counted to him as righteousness. Faith is the basis for God’s righteousness (right standing with God). Good works are important but they are not enough to save a man from destruction. Many unbelievers are moral upright and trustworthy more than some believers but until they have faith in Christ as Saviour, they will be heading for destruction.

How does it apply to New Testament righteousness?

Abraham’s obedience was his basis for acceptance before God. Salvation in the Old Testament involves accepting God as your God just like Rahab the harlot was accepted into God’s family and later became the maternal lineage of Jesus Christ. She was an harlot but she believed in God of Israel and left her family and followed the Jews, because of this, in the genealogy of Jesus Christ, she was among the two women mentioned because through that same adulterous woman, God raised the Messiah.

How does she get the acceptance before God? She believed in the God of Israel. Does she continue with her harlotry? No. That’s power of God in us, when we believe in Him, he made us righteous and we count all those dirty behaviors as sin because New Person has emerged in us.

So also, under the New Testament a man is declared or made righteous when he believes in Salvation through faith in Christ.

In Romans 4:3, the Bible says:

*For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.*

Do you notice the Abraham’s condition for righteousness?

Let’s consider it with New Testament condition for righteousness

In Romans 3:22, the Bible explains how we can become righteous

*Even the RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD which is BY FAITH OF JESUS CHRIST unto all and upon all them THAT BELIEVE: for there is no difference:*

What is the point in this teaching?

You are not going to become righteous when you have kept all commandments. No. The day you believe and confess Jesus as your Lord and Saviour according to Rom. 10:9-10, that day, you become righteous.

What does it mean to be righteous? It means you are declare innocent, guiltless and acquitted. It means you now have right standing with God without guilt of sin

Glory be to God.
